Seven Keys to High Initiative Teams (HIT)

Here are some tools for developing an otherwise average business team [or work group] into a High Initiative Team (HIT). See how well your team measures up to these guidelines

  1. Shared Goals/Clear Direction: There is a clear and shared overarching purpose or mission; goals and values are understood by all.
  2. Team Talent: There is a full complement of competence/knowledge/skills available and relevant to tasks at hand; talents are utilized and further developed
  3. Roles and Responsibilities: Expectations of roles are well established and team members understand how their roles fit into the bigger picture.
  4. Operating Procedures: System and processes are in place for planning, conducting meetings, identifying and solving problems, making decisions, giving and receiving information, evaluating progress, and performing tasks.
  5. Interpersonal Relations: People on the team work together collaboratively.  Systems are in place to recognize differences, handle conflict, provide support and challenge, and effectively communicate with one another.
  6. Reinforcement: Systems such as rewards, recognition, and accountability (holding people responsible) are highly evident for both individuals and the overall team.
  7. External Relations: The team has effective relations with other groups/teams and people (both internal and external); opportunities for collaboration with other groups are aggressively pursued and threats effectively addressed.

How does your team currently operate along each of the seven keys?  Think of examples of how your team demonstrates excellence in these areas. Where does your team have opportunities for improvement?
