5 Keys to Exceptional Leadership

Key #1: Help Your Team Develop A Compelling Mission Statement.

  • Co create a mission statement with your team that relates to the company vision.
  • Relate the team’s daily activities to their mission.
  • Develop this statement gradually over time; do not look at it as a task to be checked off your to-do list as soon as possible.

Key #2: Share Responsibility

  • Put the team in control.
  • Make your team responsible for the project; not just you.
  • Look for answers from your team.
  • Encourage members to make the decisions; do not make all decisions
  • Create a team culture of collaboration -- a commitment to helping each another.

Key #3: Encourage Constructive, Fearless Conflict Over Differences Among Themselves.

  • Approach the resolution of differences with a win-win attitude.
  • Do not allow yourself or members to demean, attack personalities, or use ridicule or sarcasm.
  • Encourage discussion group’s concerns about the task.
  • Create an environment where it is safe to make mistakes.

Key #4: Help The Individual Development of Team Members.

  • Delegate new responsibilities to members that are just outside their comfort zone.
  • Encourage each member to have a plan for their professional development.
  • Use the coach approach to elicit better performance from members.
  • Give objective feedback on members' performance.
  • Provide training and mentoring opportunities for members.

Key #5: Communicate fully.

  • Share all information with your team members that would  be useful to their creation of solutions.
  • Be flexible in allowing your team to get the job done their way, not your way.
  • Keep your group focused on it's goals.
